EDUCATION AND TRAINING in MUSCULOSKELETAL MEDICINE IN NZ.

NZAMSM is actively involved in Education of its members, other GPs, and allied Health Professionals in all aspects of Musculoskeletal Medicine. It is also responsible for training its members in manual medicine. The key to Education is this website and the members only website, which will be continually updated and modified. The information available ( including links to other sites ) is aimed to be up to date, evidence based, and relevant to New Zealand.

Listed on another page of the website are the current members, their geographical location, and qualifications. From this database, it is possible to find the medical practitioners in your area involved in Musculoskeletal Medicine. If you wish to see a specialist, then referral by your own GP is preferable. This allows continuity of care, as well as advantages of cost with regards to ACC (All ACC referrals by an ACC registered provider to a musculoskeletal specialist incurs NO cost to the patient)

All Medical Practitioners are required to undergo Accreditation in their particular medical discipline in order to become Vocationally Registered, as defined by the NZ Medical Council. (Musculoskeletal Medicine is recognized by the NZ Medical Council as a separate Branch of Medicine) To maintain this Registration, Re-Accreditation (three yearly cycles) must be undertaken.

The NZAMSM has ongoing educational activities and is establishing a training programme for its Registrars to fulfill these requirements. There are four levels of Education and Training that the NZAMSM is involved with: 1. GPs with an interest in Musculoskeletal Medicine. ( NZAMSM is a Registered CME provider for the RNZCGP ) 2. GPs who have completed a Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine (refer to Otago University’s Website for more details) 3. Registrars training to become Musculoskeletal Specialists 4. Specialists in Musculoskeletal Medicine Local co-coordinators are being established in each area to facilitate these activities. At a national level there are a number of ongoing activities:

  1. Annual Musculoskeletal conference (refer to conference page)
  2. Practical workshops to enhance manual medicine skills. In March 2004 Prof. Fossgreen held courses in Myofascial Release and Functional Indirect Technique, (an Osteopathic technique new to NZ)
  3. Registrar Training Programme. This is for those Medical Practitioners who have decided to specialize in Musculoskeletal Medicine. Components include hospital based Registrar Posts, working in Private Specialist Practices, completing a Masters in Pain Medicine, passing the Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine exam.
  4. Specialist Re-accreditation activities such as Quality Assurance Programs, CME (Continuing Medical Education), Teaching and Research.
